SAUNDERS RECORDERS

BRISTOL ENGLAND

The famous '15 Solos'.

Cross Reference and Notes
by
John Everingham

These are perhaps the best known unaccompanied pieces of all the baroque recorder repertoire. They are published in many forms, at the back of Giesbert's 'Method', by themselves and in two recent collections. These pieces are not original recorder music and modern editions present them reworked from the original versions for traverso, the baroque flute. Not only are there differences in the numbering and selection, there are differences of key between the modern editions. In the table below I have taken Schott ED12216, first published in 1937, as my starting point. (I only note the key when there is a difference between editions.)

I am now expanding the concordance to include 'Fantasias and Caprices' OFB 204 and 'Caprices and Fantasias' ED 12148. Note the titles! The contents are not the same. To get the copy you need you must quote the edition number correctly, or say or write the right words in the right order. (Thank you, M & W.) It is time consuming and 'work in progress' but I have done enough for it to be useful. (A ~ indicates not checked, yet.)

Gudrun Heyens has arranged the pieces in 'Fantasias and Caprices', OFB 204, to form six 'sonatas' (three of four movements and three of three movements). This is an aid to the public performance of these intriguing and challenging pieces. (One can do the same with 'The Bird Fancier's Delight'.)
